Painting Depicting a Woman and A Man in A Cafe Visual Analysis

look closely at ONE painting (chosen from a set of three i attached) and present a coherent visual analysis. You are expected to go well beyond a basic description (which can be given in a paragraph or so) and to look very carefully at the image, drawing out the essential ? and often subtle ? details that are important. You are not expected to go to the library and learn more about the history and background of the painting (i.e., please don?t!). That will come in upper-division courses. Some general questions to keep in mind as you look at them are: What is happening in the picture? What is the general mood of each picture, and what is it in particular that gives that impression? What did the painter of each picture consider the most important part of the composition? Is it the most prominent or obvious part of the scene? Why or why not, and what makes you think so? To what degree did the painter act as a camera, recording a scene, and to what degree did she or he act as an interpreter, translating a scene into something very different? What are the consequences of such a translation? How can I pull together all of the elements, large and small, into a complete interpretation of the picture? A close look at the details in each picture will be essential in order to draw out and define these characteristics.
