Specific Assignment Guidance
The aim of this assignment is to allow you to consider how a variety of theoretical ideas, approaches, models and concepts are used in conjunction with each other in practical work with children, young people and families.
Look out in our guest lectures, weeks 7-11, for different underpinning ideas that shape the practice of our guest speakers. For example Ashlee Jacobs from the Raedwald Trust draws on interesting research on trauma and brain development to consider how young people in non-mainstream educational environments might respond to stressful experiences and thus how staff around the child can provide support.
Identify any perspectives, theories or models that are interesting to you, or that you believe complement existing psychodynamic perspectives
General Assignment Guidance
Within your essay you are crafting an argument to respond to the question or statement posed. You need to consider carefully the following:
– Structure: ensure your essay has a clear introduction and conclusion. These sections bookmark your argument and give a clear indication to the reader where you are going and then, coming full circle, where you have been.
– Evidence: to construct an argument you will need to provide evidence for your claims. In this essay these are in the form of references. Please use the APA citation format and draw from both resources provided in the module and those garnered from your own literature searching. You may use non-academic texts if they add to your discussion. However, be wary of non-peer reviewed websites and sources.
– Remit and Coverage: The essay question here asks you to identity two non-psychodynamic perspectives, do not be tempted to include more than this. Remember to balance your word count giving equal time and attention to the two non-psychodynamic perspectives as well as leaving plenty of space for the final task, which is to identify how they support or supplement a psychodynamic way of working.
The term psychodynamic approach to work with children is a broad one. You can tackle this in multiple ways. For example, you can identify particular aspects of this general approach, such as attention to childhood experiences and/or unconscious processes. Or you can identify one or two particular psychodynamic/psychoanalytic concepts that work well with the non-psychodynamic theories youve chosen; for example containment or transference.
– Plan: Always ensure you construct an essay plan. Whatever format your plan takes, be it bullet points, a mind map or some other style, it is during the reading and planning phase of essay writing when you can organise your thoughts. The result is usually a much more logical and coherent piece of work.
