Internal Colonialism: Established institutions (educational, political, social, religious, etc.) developed by the predominant group in order to “control” people. Slavery and voting requirements (property ownership, gender etc.) are two examples of internal colonialism used by the state/government to “control” people. Mario Barrera discusses 19th-century policies negatively impact Mexican-Americas.
Compensatory Justice
Processes by which people that have been treated “unfairly” must be compensated to ensure justice. Past historical “injustices” may be “compensated” today.

Should we compensate Mexican Americans today for past injustices?The objective for this assignment is for students to reflect on the concept of “internal colonialism” and “compensatory justice” within the context of the Mexican American historical experience, Horsman and Barrera, and your selected three outside sources. Once you read, reflect, and review the required readings and your outside sources, then please write a 1500-word essay on the following:In light of the historical fact that Mexican Americans can be considered victims of past discrimination, should we compensate Mexican Americans today (2022) for past injustices? To restate this issue: According to Horsman and Barrera Mexicans had their ancestral lands stolen, suffered under racist legal systems, abject violence, and were catapulted to the lower levels of society in the southwest during the 19th century. In light of this historical institutionalized discrimination, does America today (2022) owe “anything” to this group? Again, your thesis must address the points raised by Horsman, Barrera, and your three selected outside sources, and of course, you must clearly respond if you support or do not support “compensation/reparations.”
