So, is yoga in the West just blatant cultural appropriation or can it be justified as somehow “ancient?”
Ascetic practices like extreme breath retention, hanging upside down from trees, fasting, celibacy, and prolonged concentration on one thing like the tip of your nose, third eye between your eyebrows etc. made their way into the different viewpoints surrounding yoga in India. However, today, yoga is all about asana (postures like lotus, downward facing dog etc.) So, is yoga in the West just blatant cultural appropriation or can it be justified as somehow “ancient?” FYI, I have a very strong background on various “old school” yogic practices that you likely have not encountered elsewhere, so if that interests any of you, I will be happy to share on the message board if people ask.
