After you watch the video above – Please answer the following questions with including your thoughts on the video as well:
1. As you have read, dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a very controversial disorder. The diagnosis of this disorder has created quite a stir among mental health professionals. The ongoing debate is the belief that this disorder is not real and perpetuated by misguided clinicians. Some clients are extremely impressionable and vulnerable while in therapy and follow the lead of the therapist, consequently, buying into the suggestion of multiple personalities. On the other side, you have professionals who assert that clients create identities as a defense mechanism to avoid trauma. Clients diagnosed with DID tend to have horrific histories of abuse. Please respond with your research (look on the internet as well)whether this disorder is real or imposed. Can a traumatic event cause the creation of an “alter” to protect oneself?
2. Tell us about at least three “personalities” that you feel that you could express, perhaps depending upon the situation you are in, the people you are with, or the way you are feeling. If you need help, think about situations like being with your parents and best friends, attending a sports event, being at a party with your best friends, watching a sad movie by yourselves, and participating in an interview for a new job. Would you be interested in one of the personalities being the opposite sex. Think about the ways you could benefit from having separate “masks” to put on whenever you wanted.
