This major is very strong on defining the social world as a complicated and complex system. Its complexity requires seeing the world as an interconnection of many things. There is no such thing as a simple social problem.  No social problem is one area of expertise or discipline. In this reflection, you will apply what you know about interdisciplinary studies to an issue that impacts your community.  What communities are you part of?

This major is very strong on defining the social world as a complicated and complex system. Its complexity requires seeing the world as an interconnection of many things. There is no such thing as a simple social problem.  No social problem is one area of expertise or discipline. In this reflection, you will apply what you know about interdisciplinary studies to an issue that impacts your community.  What communities are you part of?  Suggestions for communities are your place of worship, neighborhood, work place, sports team, university, social group, etc. Now, think about a social problem or issue that impacts your community. Is it segregation, tension among neighbors, political differences, fear of gun violence, increase in crime, work place hierarchies, high cost of groceries, discrimination, larger number of firings or resignations, over working culture, underage drinking, low attendance at sporting events, etc? What are the different parts of the problem or issue?  How are these different parts interacting to create a more complex situation? For example, during the pandemic, our university was impacted by COVID-19 closures. Closing FSU was not simple, it required many changes that changed social and public life from sporting events to remote learning to economic costs of running a closed university. For this reflection:1. Describe the social problem or issue impacting your specific community. How is it impacting your community? What are the different parts of the problem or issue? 2. Call on two disciplines (sociology, political science, economics, etc) to discuss the overlapping aspects of the social problem currently impacting your community. 3. How would you approach such a complex problem? Who should be at the table help solve or manage it?
