The Five-Paragraph Essay Form1. Introductory Paragraph a. State your thesis, a simple statement about what you are writing about in the essay. Keep it simple! b. Avoid sweeping hook openings in these essays. The more simple, and the more focused on the thesis, the better. c. Provide a mini-outline of what you are going to use to support your thesis d. The last sentence should be a transitional hook sentence, leading into the body of the essay 2. Three Body Paragraphs 1) First Paragraph a. This paragraph should contain your strongest argument and your best example to support your thesis. It should have a transitional sentence as well. 2) Second Paragraph a. This paragraph should contain your second strongest argument and second strongest example or illustration to support your thesis. A sentence in this paragraph should remind the reader of the overall argument of the essay once again.3)Third Paragrapha. This paragraph should contain your weakest points, examples, or illustrations. It should relate to the statement you made in the introductory paragraph. It should contain a strong transition sentence to the concluding paragraph. 3. Concluding/Summary Paragraph a. A restatement of the thesis statement, but not a duplicate sentence. Use words that echo the thesis statement. b. A summary of the three supporting points used in the essay. c. A final statement that signals the discussion has come to an end. d.
