Write an essay in which you assess the effectiveness of congress.

The 113th Congress (January 2013 to January 2015) ended with many comparing it to the historical “Do-Nothing Congress,” a Congress characterized by its perceived lack of productivity and resistance to many of President Harry Truman’s proposals. Now with the 114th Congress (January 2015 to January 2017) in full swing, and with some changes in party power (the Republican Party is now the majority in both houses), there is speculation that there will continue to be a decline in bills passed and tense relations between the presidency and Congress. Some even argue that Congress is broken. Do you agree? Is Congress broken? Write an essay in which you assess the effectiveness of Congress. Base your evaluation on at least two criteria associated with the responsibilities/powers of the institution (e.g. bills passed, representation of the people, government oversight, etc.). Important things to remember: Please do not use a font size larger than 12. Double-spaced. Correctly cite your sources. Consistent use of one format is expected. You may use the MLA citation style. Be careful to use appropriate academic sources. For instance, a blog or Wikipedia is NOT an appropriate source for this assignment. Books, academic journals, and newspapers are appropriate. You may also reference government websites and polling data. Do not use the course textbook as one of your academic sources. Please seek other outside sources.
