Step 1: Read the article and media report

Read the journal article and media report located in the assignments section of HuskyCT. The article presents original empirical evidence and the media report that covers it (or covers the topic it is about). These are in the “Assignments” section of HuskyCT. You should choose to read set 1, set 2, or set 3. Do not mix across sets.

This assignment has been updated this year to align with what you will need to be able to know and do once you graduate. Thus, there is no sample for me to give you that aligns 100% to this assignment. I have provided an example from the previous iteration of this assignment, which focused solely on an article and critiquing it. It did not have an associated media report, nor did it ask for students to suggest 5 changes. Thus, this example will only be able to help you with a portion of this assignment.

Step 2: Write your critique

Write your own independent, brief (4-6 pages, double-spaced) critique of the selected article and media report separately. To help you get started, below is a suggested outline for your paper:

Summary of article features (concise description, 1 page or less)

Analysis of research design and implementation (strengths and weaknesses of the entire article)

Conclusions about study quality (In general, was the study a good one? Why? How could it have been strengthened?)

Implications for practice (What does the study do, or not do, to inform practice in real world settings?)

The critique may include a very short summary of the contents, but the primary focus should be on your analysis of the quality of the articles. For example, you may decide to discuss the ethical

implications, or the theoretical framework. You do not need to provide a reference for the articles you are reviewing, but if you do use additional sources you will need to reference them. Always provide citations within the text if you use direct quotes. References, citations, and quotes should adhere to the most recent version of the APA manual.

Step 3: Critique Extension

Write your own independent, extension (2-5 pages, double-spaced) of this research by suggesting five (5) changes (3 for the journal article and 2 for the media report) you would make and why those modifications are core for the article or media report.

Grades will be determined based on the criteria included on the next page and include the extent to which you have accurately and adequately evaluated the quality of the article; and suggested extensions that are feasible and would enhance the study and dissemination efforts about it. Papers that include a long summary of the contents, but very little analysis will receive lower grades. The criteria that will be used to grade your critique are provided below.
