Step 1: Read the article and media report

Read the journal article and media report located in the assignments section of HuskyCT. The article presents original empirical evidence and the media report that covers it (or covers the topic it is about). These are in the “Assignments” section of HuskyCT. You should choose to read set 1, set 2, or set 3. Do not mix across sets.

This assignment has been updated this year to align with what you will need to be able to know and do once you graduate. Thus, there is no sample for me to give you that aligns 100% to this assignment. I have provided an example from the previous iteration of this assignment, which focused solely on an article and critiquing it. It did not have an associated media report, nor did it ask for students to suggest 5 changes. Thus, this example will only be able to help you with a portion of this assignment.

Step 2: Write your critique

Write your own independent, brief (4-6 pages, double-spaced) critique of the selected article and media report separately. To help you get started, below is a suggested outline for your paper:

Summary of article features (concise description, 1 page or less)

Analysis of research design and implementation (strengths and weaknesses of the entire article)

Conclusions about study quality (In general, was the study a good one? Why? How could it have been strengthened?)

Implications for practice (What does the study do, or not do, to inform practice in real world settings?)

The critique may include a very short summary of the contents, but the primary focus should be on your analysis of the quality of the articles. For example, you may decide to discuss the ethical

implications, or the theoretical framework. You do not need to provide a reference for the articles you are reviewing, but if you do use additional sources you will need to reference them. Always provide citations within the text if you use direct quotes. References, citations, and quotes should adhere to the most recent version of the APA manual.

Step 3: Critique Extension

Write your own independent, extension (2-5 pages, double-spaced) of this research by suggesting five (5) changes (3 for the journal article and 2 for the media report) you would make and why those modifications are core for the article or media report.

Grades will be determined based on the criteria included on the next page and include the extent to which you have accurately and adequately evaluated the quality of the article; and suggested extensions that are feasible and would enhance the study and dissemination efforts about it. Papers that include a long summary of the contents, but very little analysis will receive lower grades. The criteria that will be used to grade your critique are provided below.

Are people born with talents and skills, or are they all learned?

The question: Are people born with talents and skills, or are they all learned? Think of extremely talented people, and think of your own unique skills and talents. Use information from Brooks’ essay, but also use your own examples to develop your essay.

Your essay should contain:

1. An introduction with background information, the main idea that answers the question, and key points that would help you to focus, structure, and develop your response.

2. A clear, complete, accurate paragraph summary of Brooks’ essay, “Genius: The Modern View.” This should be your second paragraph.

3. Body paragraphs that develop your key points.

4. A conclusion.

Your impression is your main idea, always. That’s very important. “Impression,” here, is just another word for the main idea. William Raspberry’s impression of college majors is that they don’t matter that much. Someone else might have a different impression, might disagree with Raspberry. The main idea will be what your paper is about. It is a statement of your answer to the question. It will help you to focus your essay.

Your main idea and key points will go in your introduction, with one more important element: Background information. This is extremely important because it allows the reader to understand the context of what is going on.

When you have your introduction, develop your key points into paragraphs. Use a topic sentence to focus each paragraph on a specific point. Use examples and short stories–anecdotes–to develop your body paragraphs. Give details and descriptions of people and places.

This discussion is based on a TED Talk by Dan Pink. Pink, a former speech writer, career analyst, and author of the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, reveals some remarkable facts about motivation that have been confirmed in many social science experiments but aren’t widely recognized. Pink argues that the way were motivating people is all wrong, and he proposes a new model to replace traditional incentives.

Choose one of the following social issues as the focus of your case study:

Issue #1: Language and Power

Language is one of the most foundational aspects of humanity. Rita Mae Brown describes language as “the roadmap of a culture” because “it tells you where its people are from and where they are going.” Language encompasses so much of who we are as individuals and as a society, yet many never stop to think about the role of language beyond its function in communicating. Rita Mae Brown further explains that “language exerts hidden power, like the moon on the tides.” If language is indeed so compelling, then, as Franz Fonan put it, “mastery of language affords remarkable power.” Our use of language can help us to connect with significant others and potential business partners. Our use of language could be the difference between a passing or failing grade. It could also be the difference between getting hired for a job and being rejected as an applicant. Angela Carter characterized language as the “the instrument of domination and liberation.” In other words, language can be used to edify, but it can also be used to exploit. It is up to us, as individuals and as members of society, to choose the ways in which we use language and the power that it carries.

Issue #2: Freedom and Security

When debating the balance between freedom and security, it is often noted that Benjamin Franklin once declared: “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” This tension between freedom and security continues to increase in light of the ever-increasing role that technology plays in our professional and personal lives. Speaking to the impact of technology, Misha Glenny asserted that, “the Internet has fashioned a new and complicated environment for an age-old dilemma that pits the demands for security against the desire for freedom.” Whether it be larger issues like cybersecurity and terrorism or a more personal issue such as monitoring our children’s online activity, the tension between freedom and security is always present. Perhaps, one of the greatest challenges that we face personally and as members of a global society is balancing our need for freedom with our need for security.

Issue #3: Health and Wealth

In our capitalist society, there seems to be ongoing obsession with money and material wealth. Everything from social media to rap music to reality television seems to fuel our desire for more money and for more things. Money and material possessions are central to our understanding of what it means to be wealthy. Contrary to this ideal, Mahatma Gandhi explained that, “it is health that is real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver.” While most would agree that healthy living is important, it seems as though our desire for health is often secondary to our quest for wealth. As A.J. Reb Materi put it, “so many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.” This begs the question, what exactly is health? Furthermore, what role does wealth play in living a healthy life? One would only need to walk through the organic section of the local grocery store to realize that healthy living can be quite costly. In the same way, one would only need to review a recent medical bill to see that not living a healthy life can also be quite costly. As a society and in our individual lives, we must find ways to reconcile our need for health with our quest for wealth.

How does East Asian law differ from Western law?

How will the essays be graded?

Your graders will be looking for three things:

Does the essay present an argument that answers the question chosen by the student?
Are there references to the book and lectures to support the essay’s argument?
Is the text well-structured and in compliance with formatting requirements?
If your essay satisfies the three criteria above, you will do well regardless of which specific argument you use. Any citation of the course material that serves to support an argument that answers your question will be accepted as a valid source.
