Social responsibility is the obligation a corporation has to the public and its environment. Beyond the profitable outcome of a corporation’s existence, they have an obligation and responsibility to shareholders, non-corruptive operations, business strategies, and ethical practices (Wheelen et al, 2017). Social responsibility is so influential, that how a corporate governance performs and operates could set the tone to external stakeholders. “[E]veryone’s social responsibility impacts everyone in society and becomes the basis of the new socio-economic order” (Dyck et al, 2014, p. 171).
When does a corporation need a board of directors?
- Board of directors are a separate, parallel form of leadership along with the CEO. Their intentions have to be in the corporation’s best long-term interest (Wheelen et al, 2017). The three groups that make up the corporate governance are the board of directors, top management, and shareholders.
With the past widespread incidences of internal corruption of board of directors, shareholders sometimes question the need for one. Board of directors are in need to direct the affairs of the corporation but not to manage them, in topics of financial position, current strategy, and risks the company may face (2017). Depending on the size of the corporation or the need of the board of directors, it will determine how active and involved the board will participate.

TASK: Write 1400 to 1600-word rhetorical analysis paper in the MLA style (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1- inch margins, with integrated citations and a Works Cited page) in which you summarize an argument you have researched yourself before analyzing the fallacious rhetoric it employs, why it is or isn’t effective, and whether it is dishonest, poorly reasoned, or both. Remember that rhetorical analysis includes an examination of the truth (objective, subjective, moral, and so on), value (social, cultural, political, and so on), and efficacy (logos, ethos, pathos, or kairos) of an argument – and keep in mind that an argument can be dishonest or wrong and still highly effective. In the book Making Hard Decisions: An Introduction to Decision Analysis, Robert T. Clemen presents an example in which he discusses the 1982 John Hinckley trial. In describing the case, Clemen says: In 1982 John Hinckley was on trial, accused of having attempted to kill President Reagan. During Hinckley’s trial, Dr. Daniel R. Weinberger told the court that when individuals diagnosed as schizophrenics were given computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans, the scans showed brain atrophy in 30% of the cases compared with only 2% of the scans done on normal people. Hinckley’s defense attorney wanted to introduce as evidence Hinckley’s CAT scan, which showed brain atrophy. The defense argued that the presence of atrophy strengthened the case that Hinckley suffered from mental illness.
- Approximately 1.5 percent of the people in the United States suffer from schizophrenia. If we consider the prior probability of schizophrenia to be .015, use the information given to find the probability that a person has schizophrenia given that a person’s CAT scan shows brain atrophy.
- John Hinckley’s CAT scan showed brain atrophy. Discuss whether your answer in part helps or hurts the case that Hinckley suffered from mental illness.
- It can be argued that .015 is not a reasonable prior probability of schizophrenia. This is because .015 is the probability that a randomly selected U.S. citizen has schizophrenia. However, John Hinckley was not a randomly selected U.S. citizen. Rather, he was accused of attempting to assassinate the President. Therefore, it might be reasonable to assess a higher prior probability of schizophrenia. Suppose you are a juror who believes there is only a 10 percent chance that Hinckley suffers from schizophrenia. Using .10 as the prior probability of schizophrenia, find the probability that a person has schizophrenia given that a person’s CAT scan shows brain atrophy.
