The training involves emotion management which was discussed earlier this semester in Arlie Russell Hochschild’s The Managed Heart. They are shaping these salespeople to be “go getters” and mange their emotions in order to be seems in that manner. In, The Persistence of Gender Inequality in Employment Settings, sociologist Cecelia Ridgeway asks why women have not been able to move into the highest ranks of professional management. She finds that preconceived status expectations held by both men and women are in part to blame. This then continues to maintain the status quo. Please review her list of status beliefs and make a list of other categories of status beliefs based on other aspects of self, ie race, class, sexual orientation etc. Discuss how her theory might be used to explain persistent discrimination for these other aspects of self.

Based on the evidence provided by Spelke and Pinker and all the other authors in the reading set, do you agree with Pinker that “there is more than “a shred of evidence” for sex differences that are relevant to statistical gender disparities in elite hard science departments?” If yes, why? If not, why not?
